Car Accidents, Fatal Crashes on the Rise in Wichita Falls

Firefighters At A Car Accident Scene

Will this troubling trend continue in 2022?

Roads can be dangerous when those behind the wheel are reckless. New data shows that the roads in Wichita Falls have been increasingly dangerous in recent years.

According to the Wichita Falls Police Department Annual Report, the city saw an increase in both car accidents and fatal crashes from 2020 to 2021. There were a total of 2,151 motor vehicle accidents in 2020 and 2,602 in 2021, an increase of 451 crashes. During that same timeframe, Wichita Falls also saw the number of fatal crashes double, going from 4 to 8.

Sadly, things don't seem to be getting better in 2022.

Negligence is often to blame

In mid-March, Wichita Falls Police responded to a two-vehicle crash. Witnesses say a woman was speeding down Old Jacksboro Highway and running red lights when she crashed into another vehicle on Central Freeway, ejecting her from her vehicle.

According to News Channel 6, the woman received treatment in the hospital and the other driver suffered minor injuries. Police say the area is known for people running red lights and warn drivers to be careful when entering that intersection.

Accidents like this underscore how dangerous our roads and highways can be, but it's worth noting that no matter how careful you are when you're driving, it only takes one reckless driver to cause a crash that leaves you severely injured—or worse.

Wichita Falls crash statistics

Speeding and other forms of negligent driving make the roads in Wichita Falls dangerous and put everyone at risk of getting injured or killed in a car accident. In a 2020 report published by Aceable, Wichita Falls was ranked the 5th most dangerous city for drivers in Texas with 10.52 fatal car accidents per 100,000 residents, despite being the city with the fewest amount of people on the list.

Rounding out the remaining top 5 most dangerous cities for Texas drivers were Fort Worth with 10.61 fatal crashes per 100,000 residents; Odessa (12.44); Beaumont (14.35); and Dallas (14.42). The city also made the list of the top 10 least populated cities with a high number of DUI-related accidents and fatalities.

In the same annual report from the Wichita Falls PD, the data also shows that there were 15 more motorcycle accidents (including one fatal) in 2021 compared to 2020.
